Présentation

Tinarawene offers expeditions to discover Niger’s Saharan deserts, landscapes, peoples and culture. Journeys also cover the Sahel regions of Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin. One should not visit this region without also discovering the Niger River with all its bustling markets, ancient towns, and abundant wildlife.

Tinarawene is the plural form of the word desert in Tamashek “The Tuareg language,” and the name of the agency founded by a local Tuareg, Souleymane Icha . Tinarawene has achieved success through consistent hard work, research, and a high level of commitment to the care of its guests. A large percentage of Tinarawene’s business now comes from recommendations by previous guests pleased with our service

Niger is beginning to attract visitors from all over the world. Tinarawene’s primary objective is to show our visitors the beautiful and varied faces of Niger and West Africa’s Sahara and Sahel regions. In Niger’s northern Sahel region, one encounters ancient African history by touring the earliest rock engravings ever discovered (featured in National Geographic Magazine), discovers the enduring route of Trans Sahara trade (Salt Caravans) and sees the nomads of the Sahara (Tuaregs + Toubou). South of the Sahara are the ancient city’s of the former empires of Kanem Bornou, the Songhai (Gao + Timbuktu), and the great Hausa trading town of Zinder with its proud and singular architecture. One can also travel to the north into the sparsely populated and rarely visited regions of the Djado Plateau and come across a trail of ancient fortified citadels. Niger is an ancient land of mystery much of its history still remains to be discovered.

Tinarawene helps sustainable development in Niger by financially supporting schools and students, health care, and the construction of rural wells.
